The hangers have keyhole slots on the back that hang on screws in the wall.  The front piece that shows when hanging on the wall is 1½" wide. Hangers are usually sized to be the same length as the top of the rug or quilt.  Slightly shorter is OK, but if it is longer the back piece will show.
